Why it’s Good to Attend Discos

It’s Friday, last class of the day and you’re excited for school to finish. You just long to go home, relax and forget about all the worries of the day. A marathon re-run of Game of Thrones is calling to you. Then, five minutes before the bell rings, Sonia leans over to you from the desk in front.

“Hey, wanna head to Jungle tomorrow night?”

Your heart stops. Oh hell. Just when you could relax from the awkward socialising you had to endure this week. Laughing at Tyrion was just going to have to wait for another day.

Attending discos (or nightclubs depending on your age, but that’s for another time) can be daunting. Extremely daunting. The idea of dressing up, having forced small talk with drunk students (who’ve predrinked before coming inside), being surrounded by sweat, having friends who like smoking and tolerating blaring music just doesn’t sit well with some people. Not only that, discos just have a reputation for being for loud, outgoing people. Something only the ‘rebellious’ teens do.

But discos aren’t all that bad. They can be fun and they do improve your social skills (and it doesn’t have to involve getting drunk).

The benefits of discos:

1) It’s fun
What better fun is it, then to spend time with your friends dancing? It’s a great way to de-stress, let your goofy side out and do something else for a change rather than going to the cinema again for the third time that month.

2) You get to practise small talk
When you’re shy, it’s always great to practise talking. It’s the fastest way to improve your social skills. In a disco, however, you’re going to inevitably meet drunken classmates. (So if you feel you made a major conversation blunder at any time, then you don’t have to worry about them remembering it Monday morning!)

3)
You’re out of your bedroom
Your parents just want you to be happy. They want you to do something fun with you friends. Although not all approve of discos, a lot will be thrilled you’ll be doing a common activity for teenagers.

4) You can prepare for nightclubs
Although a lot of teenagers fake ID their way into nightclubs, especially when they’re an older teen, it’s good to get some practise in discos anyway. You don’t necessarily have to worry about drinking, enclosed smoking areas, etc.

5) You might meet that special someone
I’m sure people are split on this idea. Discos are great to have fun with friends, but you could also hit it off with someone you find hot. This is quite an advanced step for shy people, however, so don’t feel pressured into something you’re not ready for and be careful.

Discos can be great fun, but of course they’re not for everyone. I’d recommend attending one at least once to get a feel for it. Discos are a fantastic place to practise conversation and possibly for getting a feel for dating. They’re also just a place to do something different with your friends. Most of all though, don’t stress too much about it and have fun. 🙂
